Rabbit Hutches

Rabbit hutches are enclosures that are designed for outdoor rabbits. A rabbit hutch serves several functions. It is primarily a safe haven for the rabbits. Rabbits are nervous creatures. They require a safe place to retreat to at the slightest hint of danger. The hutch is meant to provide this space. A well-built hutch will result in happier and less stressed rabbits. In other words, your rabbits will be healthier and less aggressive if their housing is adequate.

The principal features of an ideal hutch are:

(i)        It should be elevated from the ground so as to limit access by predators.

(ii)      It should be placed in a shady area in order to avoid abrupt changes in temperature (as the rabbits are very sensitive to changes in temperature).

(iii)     It should allow adequate ventilation.

(iv)   It should contain litter boxes or allow urine and feces to fall to the ground.

(v)    It should be preferably of wood and wire mesh as the rabbits gnaw and can damage plastic easily.

(vi)   The size of the hutch should be equated to the size and number of rabbits. Normally a square foot of space should be provided for every half a kilo of rabbit.
